The director Nikolaj Arcel personally chose Idris Elba to cast as Roland Deschain. He said in interviews that he had this vision where he saw Idris as the perfect man to play this role. He had been an admirer of his work since The Wire. Even Stephen King, the source of this movie said that he was amazed by the work of Idris and he also thinks that he is the perfect guy for this role. He also added that he thinks Idris is one of the best in this career.

This latest movie started with an 11-year old child named Jake Chambers. This kid claims that he can see visions showing a man in black who wants to destroy a tower and a gunslinger who opposes his goal. His mother and stepfather think that his dreams are the result of his trauma which he obtained when his father died in the previous year. They send him to a psychiatrist which also said that that is the reason of his visions.

Because his visions won’t stop, his parents decided to rehabilitate him. In the facility, Jake sees the workers as the monsters in his visions covered with human skin which made him go away from the facility. He tried to track down an abandoned house from his vision which he found later. When he entered the house, he discovered a portal which brought him to a post-apocalyptic world called Mid-World in the movie.

In the Mid-world, he met Roland Deschain, the last gunslinger who is also in his visions. Roland told him that he is going for Walter Padick, the man in black in Jake’s vision. He added that he seeks revenge for the death of his father, Steven Deschain. Roland told Jake that Walter is abducting children with psychic capabilities to use their power in destroying the dark tower, a structure located at the center of the universe that would allow monsters from the outside world to invade human’s habitat when destroyed.

Roland took Jake to a village for his visions to be interpreted by an oracle. Walter investigates about Jake and his escape to the Mid-world. He realized that Jake has the potential to easily destroy the dark tower. Because of this, Walter killed Jake's parents which made Jake more eager to avenge his parent's death.

Roland vows to avenge his parent's death while he teaches him how to do the gunslinger's creed as well as the basics of gun fighting. While Roland is in the gun store, Walter captured Jake. Jake used his psychic powers to alert Roland on his location. Roland confronts Walter but ended up wounded. Jake reminds Roland about the creed which killed Walter by using a trick shot.
